British Colonial
An authentic British Colonial house sited on a peninsula with panoramic water views, this 8000-square-foot estate in Old Fort, New Providence, captures the charm of colonial Bahamian style-a marriage of stately Georgian architecture with Caribbean simplicity. With perfect symmetry and a classical portico, the facade has a Georgian aesthetic, but white stucco, wood shingles, and uncomplicated details are Bahamian in flavor. Like early island dwellings, the main block and wings are only one room deep, allowing breezes to flow throughout. Diverging from the formality of the facade, the wings are expressed in the local dialect with Bahamian prop shutters and tray ceilings that enhance air circulation. The beauty of the house stems from its blending of classical elegance with the purity of vernacular material and functional form.
